This is How to Add Seasonal Hygge to Your Home

If there’s anything “sheltering in place” due to COVID-19 has taught us, it’s how to hygge at home! Over the past several months, people around the globe have been spending more time than usual within their four walls. Families are now working from home, schooling from home, living their complete lives from the safety of their residences.

While these restrictions have caused many people a great deal of stress and financial hardship, the silver lining is that many of us have developed a newfound love and appreciation for decorating and organizing.

When we started our “stay at home” orders, our house was decorated with winter decor. We quickly went into Easter, then spring, summer, fall, and we are now full-circle, decorating for winter again and Christmas. All those changes were done without leaving the house. Not one trip to Target or HomeGoods was necessary. You too can hygge decorate your home for the various seasons without breaking the bank or having to leave the house!

I have to share a secret with you though. I received the last four quarterly Decocrated subscription boxes and they have completely renewed my love for home decor. It’s because of Decocrated I now have new and stylish things to use around the house throughout the year.

What is Decocrated?

  • It’s a quarterly subscription box full of timeless, high-quality home decor items for the upcoming seasons.
  • In each box, you receive 6-9 full-size items priced well below regular retail prices.
    • So not only do you NOT have to leave the house, but you also save money.
  • Each box contains a professionally curated collection of items that either go well together in your home or they are classic neutrals that work perfectly with the decor you already own.
  • My personal experience: I LOVE every item I have received over the past year. I used the items for the intended season but also reused them in different areas of our house once the season ended.
  • SUPER BONUS: Decocrated has an online store JUST for their clients.
    • This store features additional high-quality classic home decor, complementing the items we received in previous boxes.
    • Shopping in the online store is another great way to save time AND money while keeping your home decor fresh.
  • SAVINGS TIP: By shopping through my link and using my coupon codes, you can save a substantial amount of money every quarter.

Hygge Home Decor Ideas:

When decorating with a hygge-mindset, add as many of these following items as you feel is necessary to bring that homey hygge feel.

  • House plants, big or small.
    • Succulents are my latest obsession, as well as propagating my larger house plants.
  • Big fluffy, textured soft blankets
  • Coordinating throw pillows
  • Soft, comfortable-to-walk-on rugs
  • Candles
  • Art
  • Frames
  • Vases, with or without flowers.
  • Signs
  • Doormat
  • Seasonal decor and trinkets

My favorite ways to repurpose home decor for a hygge-feel:

When I decorate our house, I get the biggest kick out of using and reusing items in unexpected ways. Here are just a few examples of what I have done over the years, I hope they get your creativity flowing:

  • Put orchids and propagating plant shoots in the windows of the shower and bathroom.
    • This is where I keep our orchids before they bloom, they love the humidity.
  • Place a potted plant in a burlap shopping bag.
  • Stack books on entryway tables.
    • Display books like the fine works of art they truly are.
  • Frame children’s art.
  • Display jewelry in an antique frame.
  • A cluster of framed antique black and white photographs, either on a table, shelf, or on the wall.
    • You can find some true treasures at local antique shows.
  • Spray paint or refinish furniture, frames, or home decor to match your new color scheme.
  • Show off your LEGO mini-figure collection on shelves.
    • Remember, LEGO isn’t just for kids!
  • Decorate unexpected areas of your house, like the laundry room.
    • You may be one of the only people to enjoy the decor, but it makes for a more enjoyable time spent in the room, trust me!

seasonal hygge home decor

For your convenience, I put together decorating checklists to help you hygge decorate your home for the seasons.

How to incorporate the checklists into your seasonal hygge decorating routine:

  1. Print the “Seasonal Hygge Decorating Checklist” free printable. Sit down with a freshly brewed cup of coffee or tea and picture your “perfect hygge home” for the upcoming season. Then complete your hygge decorating plan to get an overview of the project.
    1. How long will you need the decor up? How long is the season?
    2. What season/ holiday are you celebrating?
    3. What’s the theme? (Examples: snowflakes, chickens, wildflowers, flags, turkeys, or leaves)
      1. Our winter theme from Decocrated is light green colors and evergreen trees. This theme makes me SO happy and excited for the winter holidays.
    4. What is the color scheme? (Examples: whites, neutrals, a pop of color, matte metallic, blues, pink hues)
    5. Which areas of your home do you plan on decorating? Don’t forget rooms like your home office, they ALL deserve hygge!
  2. Go through your home and pull down decorations from the previous season.
    1. This is also a good time to remove decor you have just grown tired of.
    2. Start thinking of ways your old decor can be repurposed, or used in a different area.
  3. Put away the home decor you won’t need for the coming season.
    1. Store seasonal decor in bins clearly marked for the specific season.
    2. Store non-seasonal items separately. You may decide to use those items throughout the year.
  4. Leave out decor you plan to use in the upcoming season.
    1. Remember, blankets, and throw pillows can add a fresh look when used in a different part of the house.
  5. Go through your seasonal storage and non-seasonal home decor storage and find all the items needed for the upcoming season.
    1. Temporarily put the decor you plan on using in a central location, such as your dining room table.
    2. Refer to your theme and color schemes to find appropriate decor pieces.
  6. And now to the fun part: plan where to place each item, write it down on your “hygge decorating plan”.
  7. Then get to work: hygge while you decorate the home as planned.

Pro-tip: as you progress, take photos with your phone of the decorated areas.

    1. Looking at a photo of specific areas gives you an objective view.
    2. Photos will help you easily spot if the mantel looks lop-sided or if the throw pillows don’t match the pictures on the wall as you first thought they did.

The Seasonal Hygge Decorating Checklists

Now, grab the “Seasonal Hygge Decorating” checklist. Order your Decocrated box and don’t wait another minute to add seasonal hygge to your home, without going to the store!
